Can, Could, must, had to,may, should, ought

  1. I can speak English, but I can't speak French.
  2. Tom can swim, but his little brother can't.
  3. Tom couldn't swim two years ago, but now he can.
  4. Mary couldn't go to school yesterday, because she was ill.
  5. I could walk ten minutes a day when I was a young man, but now I can't.
  6. He could answer the teacher's question yesterday, but he can't answer the same question today.
  7. She looked everywhere for her watch, but she couldn't find it.
  8. Tom had a lot of homework yesterday, and he couldn't finish it.
  9. People couldn't travel by air two hundred years ago.
  10. He couldn't save any money, because he had a large family.
  11. The old man is almost blind, but he could see well when he was young.

9. I am not certain if my watch is right.
    My watch may be right.
10.I am not sure whether Hentry is fifteen or sixteen years old.
    Hentry may be fifteen years old or he may be sixteen years old.

We should(ought to) clean our teeth after every meal. But many of us forget to clean our teeth, or we have no time to clean them, and we are not punished. People shouldn't tell lies. But most people tell lies sometimes and they are often not punished.

A man mustn't steal. If he steals, he will be put in prison. You must study your lessons. If you don't study, you won't pass the examination. Failure is a kind of punishment.

  2. You oughtn't to smoke so many cigarettes.
  3. Mother should look after their children.
  4. Big boys shouldn't hit little boys.
  5. We should help the poor.
